ものわすれの秘密

大昔のことだ。
男の子がいた。
生まれたばかりの妹が大好きで、よく面倒をみていた。
開拓の暮らしは貧しかったから、幼いながら両親を手伝わなくてはならなかった。
ちいさな妹を背負って、男の子はいっしょうけんめい働いた。
その子はほんとうに役に立ったよ。
働き者でかしこい両親は、男の子も妹も、どちらも同じようにかわいがった。
ささやかな家庭だが、しあわせだった。
だが、そんなある日、賊に襲われた家族は、きのどくに皆殺しにされてしまう。
父親は抵抗したが家族を守りきれず、母親は乱暴されたあげくに命を落とし、妹は男の子の背中で切りつけられた。
気を失った男の子は、妹の血で、もう死んだものと思われて助かった。
もちろん心と体に深い傷を負ったよ。
記憶を失ったのだ。忘れることで自分を守ったのだな。
里の人々は男の子を哀れに思った。だがどの家も自分たちが生きるだけで精いっぱいだ。
教えられるままに、男の子は山を歩いて木の実を集め、ちいさな川で漁をした。
里でささやかな手伝いをしては、わずかばかりの食べ物をわけてもらう。
男の子はどうにか、つらい冬を生き延びた。
しかし、そんな暮らしも続かなかった。
数年後、男の子はふたたび衝撃を受ける。
賊がふたたび、里を襲ったのだ。
おさな子のいたましいなきがらに、いっきにすべてを思い出した男の子は、怒り、勇敢にも賊にむかっていった。だが、かわいそうに。その場で切り捨てられたよ。
死んでゆく間、男の子はただこう思った。
「守りたかった。この手で、妹を、守ってやりたかった」

時代はさがり、たくさんの小さな国が興っていた。たがいに領地を守り、ときに争いもあった。
ある国のことだ。
殿さまにふたりの家来があった。このふたりは兄と弟だった。
殿さまは気に入りのふたりを、たびたび競わせた。ふたりの意見を聞き、たがいに反論を言わせた。
兄はかしこい弟をきらっていた。だが決して、きらいだという態度はとらなかった。理由はない。ただ、そのほうが自分に有利だと思ったからだ。
おおらかな弟は、兄を慕い、なんでも兄に打ち明け、意見を聞いた。
弟は兄の冷静さ、おだやかさが好きだった。
自分がきらわれているなど、疑ったこともなかった。
殿さまには美しい娘がふたりいた。
後を継ぐ息子がいなかったので、気に入りの兄と弟に娘たちを嫁がせた。
やがて弟夫婦に子どもが生まれた。その子は、国の跡継ぎとなった。
兄の子どもはまだ授からなかった。そこで、殿さまは兄を呼んでこう耳打ちした。
「弟の子どもはすくすくと育っている。だが、おまえに子どもが生まれれば、その子にこの国をゆずろう」
兄の妻はやがて子どもを生んだ。その子は、弟の子の次に国を継ぐことになった。
兄はわが子に国を継がせたいと思った。殿さまの言葉だけが、兄のよりどころだった。
弟の子はかしこかった。弟によく似た、活発な子どもだ。兄の子は、ぼんやりしていることが多い。
「弟の子はかしこい」
殿さまは考えを変えてこう言った。
「跡継ぎはかしこいほうがいい」
兄の心に、強い憎しみが生まれた。
（弟が憎い。その子がいなくなればいい！）
わが子が跡継ぎだ。そのために、弟とその子どもがじゃまになった。嫉妬と欲望に目がくらんだ兄は、殿さまにうそを言った。
「隣の国が、攻め込んでまいります」
隣国とは、これまで交流もあり、すくなくとも表面上はうまくいっていた。
「弟が将軍になれば、隣国を攻め立て、必ず打ち勝つでしょう」
年老いた殿さまは、兄のうそが見抜けなかった。
「弟よ。おまえはいまから国境を守って戦え」
弟は驚いた。隣国とはうまくいっている。攻めてくるなどありえない！
「殿さま！ あの国は平和な考えを持っています。わが国に攻め入るはずがありません！」
弟は、使者としてなんども隣国を訪れていた。
「あちらはわが国よりもすすんでいます。争いを好まない平和な国です。わが国も隣国をみならうべきです！」
兄の憎しみはさらに燃え上がった。
「弟は隣国と通じているのです！
わが弟ではありながら、憎んでもあまりあるうらぎりもの！
たったいま断ち切らねば、国を守ることはできません！」
兄は殿さまにそっと耳打ちした。怒りにわれをわすれた殿さまは、弟をにらみつけてこう叫んだ。
「わが娘の夫でありながら、その立場をいいことに、わが国を売り渡すのか！」
弟の顔がおおわれ、処刑場に連れ去られた。
弟は、兄に陥れられたことを知らなかった。処刑の前に、弟は兄に叫んだ。
「兄さん！ 妻と子を、たのんだよ！」
それが弟の最期の言葉となった。
弟は死んだが、活発でかしこいその子どもは、跡継ぎのままだった。
年老いた殿さまが亡くなったとき、兄は毒を盛って弟の子どもを殺した。
こうして兄の子どもが国を受け継いだ。
おろかなその子は、父である兄がいなければなにもできなかった。兄は、幼い殿さまよりも大きな力を手にした。
やがて兄も死んだ。

さて、ひとりの男がいた。実は、もう死んでいた。いや、ゆうれいだった。
どうしてゆうれいになったのか、まずそこから話そう。
男は、広い土地と多くの小作人がいる、大きな屋敷で生まれた。
すべての財産を継ぐ子だった。
まだ少年のとき、なんということもなく家の中であばれ、屋敷の壁をこわしてしまった。
「息子が狂ってしまった！」
男の父親は、あらゆる権利を男からうばって、跡継ぎでないものとした。
男は座敷牢に入れられ、むなしい日々を過ごした。
男には才能があり、書をかけば美しく、歌を歌えばすばらしかった。学問もできた。
それなのに、座敷牢から出されたあとも、父親は男を跡継ぎに戻さなかった。
父親の死後、男はみずから命を絶った。こうして男はゆうれいになった。
死んでゆうれいになったこの男を、探し当てた者がいた。ある修行僧だ。
強い法力を使うこの修行僧は、男にこう話しかけた。
「おまえは、死んでからどれだけ時が過ぎたか、知っているか？」
男はおどろいて修行僧を見た。
「わたしはまだ死んでいない。死にたかったが、どうも失敗したらしい」
だれからも話しかけられなかったので、男は、自分が死んだことに気づかなかった。
「おまえの人生は、ほんとうはもっとすばらしいものであった。ああ、そうだ。おまえは才能にあふれた、将来有望な男であった」
男の心は、わずかに明るくなった。
「わたしはあの屋敷を受け継ぎ、小作人をきびしく働かせ、だれよりも豊かになるはずだった。あなたには、それがおわかりか？」
修行僧は大きくうなずいた。
「わかるとも！ おまえはかしこく、優秀だった。気が狂ったと言われてどんなにつらかったか。跡継ぎの座を取り上げられ、どんなにかなしかったか」
ひそかな苦悩を修行僧に言い当てられるたびに、男の重い心が軽くなってゆく。
男が継ぐはずだった家屋敷は、弟が受け継いだ。
未来を閉ざされた苦しみの中、男はただひたすら学問を重ね、考えを深めていった。
ひとは、なぜ生きるのか。
なぜ、生きることに苦しむのか。
わたしの人生は、どうして苦悩に満ちているのか。
恨んでも心は晴れない。ゆうれいになった男は、このとき、ついに悟った。
「苦悩に意味を見いだすのは、だれでもない、自分の責任だ！」
修行僧は大きくうなずき、こう言った。
「やはり、おまえはかしこい」
「おう、わたしはかしこいか」
うれしそうにほほ笑む男に、修行僧が尋ねる。
「なぜみずからいのちを絶った？」
その言葉に、男の顔がゆがむ。
「楽になりたかった。死ねば楽になれると思った。あなたに言われるまで、死んだことに気づかなかった」
「死んで楽になれるのは、人生に悔いのない者だけだ。おまえは、苦しんでなにがわかった？」
男は、すこし考えてからこう答えた。
「なぜこんな苦しみを受けなければならないのか、わからない。
わたしはだれかを陥れたこともないのに」
修行僧の目がきびしくなった。
「ほう。だれを陥れたこともないと言うか。では、その男を見るがいい」
男のまえに、ひとりの古代人があらわれた。さあ、さっき話した、殿さまの家来のことを覚えているかな？
そこにいたのは、処刑された弟だ！ 苦悩に満ち、弟がつぶやく。
「くやしい・・・わたしはだれかに陥れられたのだ」
しばらくあっけにとられていた男は、その者がだれかを、とつぜん思い出した。
「あなたは・・・！ わたしの弟だ！ そう、殿さまの国を・・・わたしから奪った！」
男は、じぶんが、だれの生まれ変わりなのか思い出した！
むかし、ちいさな国がたくさん興ったころ。
ある国の殿さまに、ふたりの家来がいた。
ふたりは兄と弟であった。
兄は弟を憎み、うそをついて陥れ、殿さまに処刑させた。
兄はおろかで身勝手な人間だった。
ほしいと思ったものは、じゃまになる弟を殺して手に入れた。
そう、じゃまをした弟が悪い。兄はそう信じていた。
弟の子どもも、毒を盛って殺した。
わが子が国を継ぐために、その子はじゃまになったからだ。
自分のしたことを、おろかな兄は、これっぽっちも反省していなかった。
それどころか、弟もその子どもも殺されて当然だと思っていた。
だがここで、男は衝撃に打たれた！ 言ってみれば、多くの学問を修めたために、すっかりかしこくなったのだな。
「そうか！ わたしの家屋敷は、弟が替わって受け継いだ。
まるで、このときその子から国を奪った、むかしのわたしのようだ！」
そう、じぶんがだれかにしたいいことや悪いことは、かならずじぶんに返ってくる。
ひとはそれを「カルマ」という。
だれかをいじめたり苦しめたりすれば、いつかじぶんが苦しみをうける。
そうだな、向こうに押したブランコが、同じ強さでこちらに戻ってくるように。言ったこと、したこと、しでかしたことは、同じ分だけ、いつかじぶんの人生で受け取ることになる。
「ゆるしてくれ！ わたしがおろかだった！」
弟が味わった苦悩を、自分のことのように感じる心が、男には育っていた。
苦しみは、コインの両面だ。
つぐないとしての苦悩、そして未来を変えるための苦しみ。
学問を修めかしこくなった男は、味わった苦しみによって、あらたな未来にふみだした。

ゆうれいになった男は、修行僧に助けられ、たましいの修行をかさねていった。
「生まれかわって、つぐないたい」
男がそう告げると、修行僧はたいへん喜んだ。
「ではこうしよう。あなたとわたしは共に生まれかわり、助け合おう」
修行僧の言葉に、男はすっかりうれしくなった。
「それはありがたい！
だがわたしは、まだ迷っている。
実は、生まれかわった自分を、守護してみたい」
ひとに生まれかわることと、生まれかわった自分を守護することが、たましいには同時にできる。それはこういうことだ。
たましいの一部が、ひととして地上に生まれかわり、その残りが、ゆうれいのままで、守護にあたるのさ。
「それはいい！ ではわたしも、生まれかわった自分を守護しようではないか」
こうしてふたりは、ゆうれいのまま守護する部分と、ひととなって地上に生きる部分にわかれた。
ああそう、あなたはもう気づいていると思うがね。
修行僧にはまだなぞがある。話のさいごに明かすまで、しばらくまってくれるかね？
さて、おとなになったふたりは、学校の教師になった。
であったとき、はじめて会ったような気がしない。そんなことがあるだろう？
このふたりもそうだった。すっかり意気投合して、仲が良かった。
だが、もうややこしいから、このふたりに名まえをつけよう。
男の生まれかわりを、タナカ先生。
修行僧の生まれかわりを、サトウ先生と呼ぼう。
なに？ ネーミングがいいかげんだって？
・・・コーヒーのおかわり、いいかね？
タナカ先生が雪山で遭難したときのことだ。
「おまえ、いまどこにいる！？」
ホワイトアウトの大吹雪だ。そりゃあ、携帯電話の電波も届かないさ。
サトウ先生は、ツーツー言うばかりで役に立たない携帯電話を、怒ってたたきつけた。
いや、良い子は決してマネをしてはいけないよ。
避難所で待っていることができず、サトウ先生は吹雪の中、タナカ先生をさがしに飛び出した。そこにいただれもが、青くなった。二次遭難を心配したからさ。
で、結論を言えば、サトウ先生は、無事にタナカ先生を連れ戻した。
だってほら、守護となったゆうれい男が、サトウ先生を守護している修行僧に、こう叫んでいたからね。
「こっちだ！ そこを右！」
サトウ先生には聞こえなかったが、修行僧にはわかった。
ゆうれいはテレパシーを使うからね。おや？ 知らなかったかね？
吹雪の中、修行僧が向きを変えると、雪だるまになったサトウ先生も、正しい方向に向かう。
言ってみれば、そう、多次元連携チームだな。
そうそう、こんなこともあった。
サトウ先生が、うっかり、財布を家においたまま、昼飯を食べに行った。
さあ支払いという時に、お金がないことに気づいたサトウ先生は、もちろん真っ青さ。
そこへタイミングよくやってきたのが、ゆうれい男にみちびかれ、どういうわけか急にラーメンが食べたくなったタナカ先生だ。
「サトウ先生じゃないですか！ これは奇遇ですねえ！ あれえ、顔色がさえないようですが、どうしました？」
「ちょうどいいところに！ 実は財布を落としたらしい！ ここの支払い、一時貸してくれ！」
「いいですよ～」
まじめなサトウ先生は、すぐにお金を返したよ。
ところで、タナカ先生は、お寿司が大好物だった。
仕事でへまをして凹むと、守護しているゆうれい男が、こうささやく。
「そう落ち込むなよ。大好きなお寿司でも食べて、元気だしなって」
それがゆうれい同士なら、テレパシーで聞こえちゃうのだな。
サトウ先生のそばで、修行僧がつぶやくわけだ。
「タナカ先生に、お寿司を買ってあげたいなあ」
まじめなサトウ先生は、理由もわからないまま、むしょうにお寿司を買いたくなり、なんの約束もないのに、タナカ先生に会いたくなるのさ。
会ってみれば、凹んでいるタナカ先生が、どんなへまをしたかを聞かされる。
（ああ、そうか）
こう、サトウ先生は思うのだな。
（このために、わたしはお寿司を届けたのか）
どうかな？ サトウ先生は、やさしいだろう？
守護しているゆうれいと、守護されている人間とは、同じことをする。
運動会でタナカ先生が子どもたちと走れば、ゆうれい男もいっしょに走っている。
音楽会でサトウ先生が子どもたちの指揮をとれば、修行僧も指揮棒をふるのさ。
いっしょに食べていっしょにねむる。守護と､ひととのつながりはとても強い。
あなたが感じたこと、考えたことは、守護にはつつぬけなのさ。
え？ 守護がいるかどうか、わからないって？
それはね、ふたつの理由が考えられる。
ひとつには、わざわざアピールしなくても、とくに問題がない場合。
ほとんどはこちらだな。
もう一方は、守護がうんざりするようなことを、あなたがうっかり、やってしまったケースかな。たとえばそう、だれかをいじめるとか、なかま外れにするとか、失敗をだれかのせいにするとか。
おや、思い当たることがない？
それなら、守護に、コミュニケーションがしたいかどうか、尋ねてみるといい。
お祈りをするときのように、そっと話しかけてごらん。
すぐには、わからないものだがね。
アンテナを立てていれば、いつかきっと答えがわかるようになる。
さあて、いよいよここからが本題だ。おやおや、前置きが長かったようだ。
ある小学校に、ふたりが勤務していた時のことだ。
サトウ先生が主担で、タナカ先生が副担任だった。
クラスに転校生があった。おとなしい、男の子さ。
当時、だれかをなかま外れにするといういじわるが、遊びとしてはやっていた。
転校生はすぐに、標的になった。
なかま外れにされたほうはたまらない。学校にいくことがつらくてならない。
タナカ先生は、転校生が問題を抱えていることに、すぐ気がついた。
「こまったことがあったら、話してごらん」
タナカ先生は、転校生にこう言ってうながすのだが、転校生はだまって首をふるだけだった。
（ぼくは、だれも信じない。おとなだって、信じるものか）
転校生のまなざしが、そう語っていた。
「ちからになりたい。打ち明けてくれないか」
タナカ先生は、そう言って転校生の肩に手をおいた。その手をふり払って、転校生はこう叫んだのさ。
「ぼくにかまわないで！」
タナカ先生は、転校生の怒りを感じ取った。だから、こう言った。
「きみは怒っている。怒って当然だ。怒りをうまく使うことだ。
使い方をまちがえてはいけない」
怒りをむりにおさえれば病気になる。
自分に向ければ、みずからをいためつけ、ふかく傷つけてしまう。
とつぜん怒りがばくはつして、だれか大切な人を苦しめてしまうこともある。
タナカ先生の言うように、怒りは、正しくあつかうものさ。
だが転校生は、タナカ先生をはげしくにらみつけると、さっとからだをひるがえし、走って行ってしまった。
転校生は、なかま外れにされたことを怒っていたし、もちろん、かなしんでもいた。
その子は、タナカ先生とのかかわりそれ自体を、拒絶したのだ。
どうしてだと思う？ そのわけは、少しあとに話してあげよう。
「やあ、タナカ先生。おや、走って行くのは転校生だね。なにがあったのかな？」
サトウ先生がやってきた。タナカ先生は、サトウ先生にすべてをうちあけた。
「あの子はこれまでたいへんなことが続いてね。もうだれも信じられなくなっているのさ。
さあ、その怒りを、うまく表現する方法がないだろうか」
タナカ先生は、転校生のことで心を痛めている。
サトウ先生には、それが自分のことのように感じられた。
秋になった。小学校では、毎年恒例の学習発表会が開催された。
クラスごとに、合唱や劇、楽器演奏などが発表される。
サトウ先生とタナカ先生のクラスでは、ふたりが考えた劇を上演した。
ナレーションの子が、マイクで話しはじめる。
「ある牧場に、子牛がやってきました。けれどもそこでは、馬だけが飼育されていたのです」
すると、思い思いにつくった馬の面をかぶった子どもたちが舞台にあらわれる。
「ヒヒーン！ あれえ、こいつ、子馬じゃないぞ！」
「ヒヒーン！ こいつ、おとなの馬でもない！」
「ヒヒーン！ 馬でないのなら、ぼくらのなかまじゃないや！」
さっそく、いじめがはじまった。
「おまえなんかあっちに行けよ！」
「むこうへ行ってしまえ！」
馬の面をつけた子どもたちが、子牛の面をつけた子どもをとりかこむ。
「そんなことをいわないで、ぼくもなかまにいれてよ」
子牛の面をつけた子どもが、みんなにたのみこむ。
人は、じぶんはグループの中にいると感じることで安心感をもつ。
あなたも、サッカーの話でもり上がると楽しいだろう？
いや、失礼。女の子はなんだろうな。食べ物？ ファッションかな？
そう、同じ話題で楽しむことは、いつだってすばらしいことさ。
だって、なかまだと感じられるからね。それが大切なのさ。
だが、ものごとを考えることができないおろか者はね。だれかをなかま外れにすることでようやく、じぶんはえらい、この中で一番ちからがあると、こう思えるのさ。
そしておろか者のなかまは、だれかをいじめてなかま外れにし、そいつのわるくちを言い合うことで、じぶんはなかまだと感じて安心するのだ。
なかま外れは、おろか者がじぶんを安心させるために、ただそれだけのために必要なのだ。
むずかしい言葉で、これを「人権侵害」という。
人があつまると、その中で、ちからのあるものが自然とリーダーになる。
だが、このときみんなを引っぱっていたのは、いじわるが大好きで、言うことを聞かない相手を、いためつけるようなおろか者だ。
その子には、じぶんがみんなを、まちがった方向に向かわせていることがわからない。
山で道に迷ったとき、リーダーがみんなをきけんな方向へつれていけば、みんなのいのちが危なくなるだろう？
リーダーは、ほんとうは子牛役の子どもを、なかまにいれてあげるべきだった。
だが反対に、みんなが子牛をいじめるようにしむけてしまった。
みんなは、じぶんで考えることをやめ、子牛をいじめて、人権侵害をおこなった。
なぜ考えることをやめてしまうのだろう？
なぜ、いつまでもおろかなままなのだろう？
学問を修めることは、考えをふかめ、かしこくなることだ。
ほんとうの責任感も、そこから生まれる。
あたまがいいかどうか、そういうことではない。
あたまがわるいから学問をしない。それはおろかなまちがいだ。
ひとはその権利として、学問を修めるものだからね。
さて、話をもとにもどそう。
舞台では、馬の面の子どもたちが、子牛の子を取り囲んではやしたてていた。
「きみは、馬じゃない！」
「あっちへ行け！」
ここで、おろかなリーダーは、あたらしいいじわるを思いついた。
そこでさっそくこう叫んだ。
「きみは、なんてくさいんだ！」
ひどいことを言えば言うほど、おろか者は大いばりする。
むずかしいことをやりとげたひとが尊敬されるように、おろか者は、ひどいことを言って、いばるのさ。
「そうだ！ おまえはくさい！ くさいなあ！」
「くさい、くさい！」
みんなはすぐに偽リーダーのマネをした。なんの考えもなかった。
なぜ、なにも考えないのだろう？
それは、考えるちからが育っていないからだ。
考える習慣が、生活の中になかった。
周囲に、見本になるおとながいなかったのだろうな。
だが、考えないことと、じぶんに責任がないこととは、まるで別ものだ。
（あの子がはじめに言いだしたから）
よくそんなふうに言い逃れをするけれども、責任は、じぶんでとらなくてはならない。
勢いよくむこうへ押しやったブランコは、同じちからで、こちらにもどってくる。
カルマとは、そういうものだ。大自然にもとからある、目に見えないルールだよ。
ところで、台本ではここで、ひとりが
「いちぬけた！ いじわるしてごめんね！ さあ、いっしょにあそぼう！」
と、こう言うことになっている。
しかし、きっかけになるはずの子どもは、いつまでもそれを言わなかった。
（どうした！ 練習したように、台本の言葉を言いなさい！）
舞台のそでから、タナカ先生が合図をおくる。だがその子は、イヤイヤと首をふった。
実は、偽リーダーの子が勝手に台本を書きかえたのだ。
（いうことを聞かないといじめるぞ！）
偽リーダーとそのなかまたちは、舞台の上で、きっかけになる子をおどかして、すっかり調子にのっていた。わるいことをした、すまないという心のいたみが、まったくないのだ。
（ああもう！ だめじゃないか！）
だが、そのときだ。舞台に飛びだそうとしたタナカ先生を、サトウ先生が止めた。
（待つのだ！ なにかが起こる予感がする！ ・・・見ていなさい！）
「いやだよ！ いじわる言わないでよ！」
子牛の面をつけた子どもが、だんだん泣き声になる。
「やあい、やあい、泣き虫！」
「泣き虫！ やあい」
ののしられて、その子はついに泣き出した。そう、まさにそのときだ！
「泣くな！ 泣くな！」
馬の面をはずして叫んだのは、怒りにかられた転校生だ。
いじめられてどんなにつらくても、決して泣かなかった子だ。だが、目のまえでその子が泣きだしたとき、転校生は本当に怒った。やさしい、友だち思いの子なのさ。
「泣くな！ 泣いたって、だれも助けてくれないぞ！」
台本にはない、心からの叫びだ。
見ていたおとなたちが、思わずうなずいたほど、真実があった。
だがどうだ！ 転校生のつぎの言葉に、みんなは凍りついた！
「いじめられたら、死んでやるのだ！ だれにも言わないで、死んでやるのだ！」
そのはげしさに、体育館はシーンとしずまりかえった。
（ああ！）
タナカ先生の胸が、ズキンと痛んだ。
（ようやく吐きだした！ つらかったな！）
「ぼくには友だちがいない。ぼくが死んでも、だれもかなしまない。死んでしまえば、楽になる。もうだれからもいじめられない！ 死んで楽になるのだ！」
はじめて聞くみんなには、思いがけない言葉だ。
出口を失った怒りは、ときにじぶん自身にむけられる。
からだを傷つけたり、死にたくなったりするのは、ふかいところにある怒りのあつかいがわからなくて、心が病気になるからさ。
「いやだよう！ ぼく、死にたくないもん！」
子牛の面をはずして、その子がまた泣きだした。
「死ぬのはいやだよう！ あーん！ あーん！」
ひとりでかかえていた痛みを吐きだして、転校生もいっしょに涙ぐむ。
「ぼくだって・・・ぼくだって、ほんとうは、死にたくないよ！」
転校生の父親は、働きすぎが原因で、自殺した。
