はじめにIntroduction
「百鬼夜行いいなぁ！ したっけ、ながなが行がんにもんなぁ・・・んだ、地元でやっぺよ！」
という、ごく軽い発想で、奥浜名湖百鬼夜行に取り組むことになったわたしは、かけだしの張り子作家です。
むかしはお年寄りから聞かされたものですが、最近はマンガやゲームによって、怖いもの、不思議なものに出会います。
実は、地域や家庭によって、その内容も対処法も違ってくるようです。
百鬼夜行をイベントとして体験され、みなさんのご家庭で、また学校・職場で、怖いもの、不思議なものについて話し合い、絶たれてしまった貴重な教えが、すこしでも地域によみがえれば、なによりの幸いに存じます。
"The Hyakki Yakou sounds great! But I
can't seem to get involved... I know, I'd love to do it in my hometown!"
I'm a budding paper mache artist, and it was with this very casual idea that I decided to work on the Oku-Hamanako Hyakki Yakou.
In the past, people would hear about it from
the elderly, but nowadays they encounter scary and mysterious things through
manga and games.
In fact, the content and ways of dealing with
them seem to vary depending on the region and the family.
I would be extremely happy if people
experience the Hyakki Yakou as an event, discuss scary and mysterious things in
their homes, schools, and workplaces, and revive some of the precious teachings
that have been lost in their communities.

In the magazine
「ぎゃーーーー」
天竜浜名湖鉄道（以下、天浜線）妖怪列車にひびく、子どもたちの叫び声。そこには、全国から集結した妖怪たち。異様なお面、乱れた黒髪、見慣れぬ姿。
「やんれ、ながれっちまったがぁ」
母親にしがみつく、ギャン泣きの女の子。アニメやマンガで見るのとまったくちがう。現実にそこにいる妖怪の、怖いこと、怖いこと。
"Ahhhhh!"
The screams of children echo through the
Tenryu Hamanako Railroad (hereafter referred to as TENHAMSEN) Yokai Train.
There, yokai from all over the country gather. Strange masks, disheveled black
hair, unfamiliar appearances.
"Oh my goodness. She's crying,"
Namihime said.
A crying girl clinging to her mother. It's
completely different from what you see in anime and manga. The yokai that exist
in reality are so terrifying.
「おっかねがぁ？ した、
そだにおっかなぐねぇべ？」
おだやかなやさしい声が、そっと繰り返し、なだめてくる。
「ごめんなぁ。びっくりしたもんなぁ」
女の子はだんだん泣き止んで、母親の胸元からそっと、見上げている。人魚の妖怪、なみ姫が、そこにいた。
"Are you scared? But it's not that scary,
is it?"
A gentle, calm voice repeated softly, soothing
her.
"I'm sorry. I'm sure you were
surprised."
The girl gradually stopped crying, and looked
up from her mother's chest. There was the mermaid spirit Nami-hime.
尾奈駅発、予約制天浜線妖怪列車は、気賀駅が終点である。浜松市北行政センターの南を流れる、都田川。この河原が、奥浜名湖百鬼夜行のメイン会場なのだ。
野外ステージでは、豊橋から駆けつけた天狗の一味、三河遊芸風流院が、三味線の弾き語りとかろやかな話術、また、あでやかな踊りで、会場を沸かせる。
The reservation-only Tenhama Line Yokai Train
departs from Ona Station and terminates at Kiga Station. The Miyakoda River
flows south of Hamamatsu City's Kita Administrative Center. This riverbank is
the main venue for the Oku Hamanako Hyakki Yakou.
On the outdoor stage, MIKAWA YUGEI FURYUIN, a group of tengu who have rushed over from
Toyohashi, thrill the audience with their shamisen accompaniment, lively
storytelling, and gorgeous dancing.
「あっちは、めんこい子ども妖怪だなぃ」
年寄りから借りた、大人サイズの羽織をぶかぶかに着て、手作りの妖怪面をつけた、幼稚園児のグループ。親や保母たちに引率され、大人たちをおどかし、おどかし、あちらからこちらへと、ゆっくり移動していく。
"Over there are some cute children's
monsters."
An adult-sized haori coat borrowed from an
elderly person. The children are wearing the large haori coat loosely and
handmade monster masks. It's a group of kindergarten children. Led by their
parents and nursery teachers, the children's monsters move slowly from here to
there, scaring and frightening the adults watching.
「こっちゃ、野良妖怪みでだない」
参加登録がなく、イベントの楽しさで妖怪仮装して来た人々は、もちろん控室は使用不可、百鬼夜行も見学のみ。都度、登録証が確認される。この線引きが重要で、イベント前の周知徹底と、当日苦情にならない対応が必要になってくる。なみ姫のように、参加デビューを志す新人妖怪が戸惑うステップでもあった。
"I wonder if they're unregistered
yokai."
People who hadn't registered to participate
came dressed up as yokai for the fun of the event. Of course, the waiting room
was not available, and the Hyakki Yakou was only for spectators. Security
checked the registration certificates each time. It's important to draw this
line, and it's important to thoroughly inform everyone before the event and to
deal with the situation so that there are no complaints on the day. This was
also a confusing step for new yokai who wanted to make their debut, like Namihime.
「こんにちは。あなたは、三ヶ日町の鵺伝説って、知ってますか？」
案内板を抱えた、二人組の小学生。「顔は猿、体は狸、足は虎。平安時代、源頼政・猪早太に、都で退治された鵺ですが、三ヶ日町に落ちてきて、地名に残っているんです」
「これが、その地図です」
ふたりめの子が、鵺代、羽平、尾奈、胴崎と、順に示してゆく。
「あら、ずいぶん詳しいんでねぇの」
小学生は、一気に話を続ける。
「でも、ひとつ、謎があるんです。羽平という場所に、鵺の羽根が落ちたというんですが、退治された鵺には、羽根がないんです。そこに、どんななぞがあるんでしょう」
なみ姫が、頭を大きく抱える。
「いや、わがんね。降参だっぺ」
小学生が、胸を張る。
「答えになるかわかりませんが、平家物語に、鵺退治は２回あったと書いてあるんです。一度目は、猿顔の、羽根のない鵺。１０年ほどあとに退治されたのは、鵺と言う化鳥でした」
のけぞっておどろく、なみ姫。
「なんだべ、よーぐ調べでんでねえの。ちっけのに、妖怪博士だっぺした」
なみ姫がほめると、嬉しそうに笑い、ふたりの小学生は、次の参加者に話しかけに行った。決してひとりでは過ごさない。セキュリティの面から、子どもたちはかならず、複数でグループ行動をしている。
"Hello.
Do you know the legend of the Nue in Mikkabi Town?"
A pair of
elementary school children holding a guide board. "It has the face of a
monkey, the body of a raccoon dog, and the legs of a tiger. In the Heian
period, Nue was defeated in the capital by MINAMOTONO-YORIMASA and INO-HAYATA,
but it fell in Mikkabi Town and remains in the place name."
"Here
is the map."
The second
child points out NUESIRO, HANEHIRA, ONA, and DOUZAKI, in that order.
"Oh,
you know a lot," says Namihime.
The
elementary school children continue talking at once.
"But
there is one mystery. They say that a Nue's feather fell in a place called HANEHIRA,
but the Nue that was defeated did not have any feathers. I wonder what mystery
there is."
Namihime
holds her head in her hands.
"No, I
don't know. I give up."
The
elementary school children puff out their chests.
"I
don't know if this answers your question, but in the Tale of the Heike, it says
that NUE was defeated twice. The first time, it was a monkey-faced, featherless
NUE. About ten years later, it was a shape-shifting bird called NUE that was
defeated."
Namihime
leans back in shock.
"You've
done a lot of research. You're a child monster expert," Namihime praises.
The two elementary school students smiled happily and went off to talk to the
next participant.
Children are
never alone. For security reasons, the children always move around in groups.
さて、「出店テント買い物チケット」でおやつをもらい、なみ姫は、みをつくし文化センターに向かった。3階和室が、女妖怪の控室だ。天浜線妖怪電車運行2時間前と、お昼頃、さらにイベント終了後の3回だけ、係りの人が鍵を開け、休憩や、人間に化けるために使用できる。
After getting some snacks with her
"shopping ticket for the stall tent," Nami-hime headed to the
Miotsukushi Cultural Center. The Japanese-style room on the third floor is the
waiting room for female yokai. The staff will open the lock and lock the room
three times a day: two hours before the Tenhama Line Yokai Train starts
running, around noon, and after the event ends. The room can be used to take a
break or transform into a human.
「運営に 妖怪屋さんが
入ってくれて、よかったね」
お手製の華やかな衣装に、目力ポイントのメイクアップ。かろやかな動きと妖しい笑顔は、九尾の狐。しかし、人間に変化している間は、社会にすっかり紛れ込んでいる。
"It's good that Yokai-ya is now involved
in the operation."
The gorgeous handmade costumes and
eye-catching makeup. The light movements and mysterious smile of the
nine-tailed fox. However, while transformed into humans, the yokai blend in
perfectly with human society.
妖怪たちは、あらかじめ参加登録をして参加料を払い、遠くから自費でやって来る。せめて交通費、できれば謝礼を出したいところだが、事業としての収益化が難しい。今日は、主催者から出店テントで使えるチケットがでており、そんな妖怪たちの腹を、あたたかく満たしていた。

なみ姫、そこがちょっと、心配・・・
The youkai register in advance, pay the
participation fee, and travel from far away at their own expense. The
organizers, the Yokai Shop, would like to at least cover the youkai's travel
expenses, and if possible, a reward, but it is difficult to make this a profitable
business. Today, the organizers were handing out tickets to be used in the
stall tents, which warmed the stomachs of the youkai.
(There have been no tips given to the
organizers or registered youkai.)
Namihime, that's a bit worrying...
そこへ、姫妖怪が飛び込んできた。
「もう、運営さんに通報しちゃった！ 聞いて！
写真撮ってあげるって人がいて、
X（旧Twitter）のアカウントに
送ってくださいって言ってるのに、
プライベートの連絡先
教えろって、しつこくて。
いきなり胸をつかんできたから、
瞬時にガッと爪を立てて、
（低い声で）つかまえた・・・
ほほ・・・って、嗤ったじゃん。
そいつ、ばっと、
走って逃げちゃった！」
Then Hime Yokai came rushing in.
"I've already reported this to the
admins! Listen!
A guy offered to take a photo for me.
I told him to send the photo to X's (formerly
Twitter) account,
but he kept pestering me, saying, "Give
me your private contact details."
He suddenly grabbed me by the chest.
So I instantly dug my claws into his arm.
(In a low voice) I caught him...
Come on...I laughed at him.
He ran off!"
ほっそりして小柄な姫妖怪だが、大胆、かつ無敵。
「妖怪、なめんでねえべ」
なみ姫も、思わずふきだした。
種々のトラブルはどうしても発生する。セキュリティが要所要所に配置されている。また、痴漢や、つきまとい・妖怪への軽視。登録妖怪は運営の妖怪屋に直で連絡がつき、信頼は厚い。
「あなた、次は、京都？」
「そう！ 会えるの、楽しみにしてる！」
全国に潜む妖怪たち。
各地の妖怪イベントで再会、SNSで連絡を取り合い、さらに交流を深めていく。仲良し妖怪の話はつきない。
Although she is a slim and small princess
yokai, she is bold and invincible.
"Don't underestimate yokai,"
Nami-hime burst out laughing.
At the Hyakki Yakou event, various troubles
inevitably occur. Security is placed at key points according to the wishes of
the yokai shop. There is also a risk of molestation, stalking, and disregard
for yokai. Registered yokai can be contacted directly by the yokai shop that
manages it, and there is a strong relationship of trust between the yokai and
the yokai shop.
"You're going to Kyoto next?"
"Yes! I'm looking forward to meeting
you!"
Yokai lurking all over the country.
They meet again at yokai events in various
places, keep in touch on social media, and deepen their friendship. There is no
end to the stories of friendly yokai.
さて、いよいよ百鬼夜行がはじまる。
運営が、会津の妖怪「朱の盆」に立ち返り、百鬼夜行の先頭を行くのだ。行列半ば、三河遊芸風流院が静かに、しかし、あでやかな舞いを魅せていく。鬼や河童、骸骨が、おさない子どもたちをおどろかせ、小柄な猫又が、おどけて手をふって、泣いた子どもを笑顔に変える。
妖怪はもう、ともだちなのだ。
Now, the parade of HYAKKI YAKOU is about
to begin.
The organizers transform into the
Aizu yokai "Shu no Bon" and lead the parade. Halfway through the
procession, MIKAWA YUGEI
FURYUIN
performs a quiet but gorgeous dance. Demons,
kappa, and skeletons frighten young children, and a small nekomata playfully
waves its hands, bringing smiles to the faces of crying children.
The yokai are now friends.
一行は、ゆっくり、ゆっくり、都田川を浜名湖方面に練り歩く。
（んだんだ。こうでねぇど。なぁ）
なみ姫が、そっとほほ笑む。
赤く染まる大空に、黒く揺らぐ、あやかし行列。下見をして撮影ポイントを決めているカメラマンが、決定的な瞬間を逃すまいと、重い脚立をかかえて走り回る。
ときは夕暮れ、逢魔が時・・・・
The group slowly, slowly parades along the
Miyakoda River towards Lake Hamana.
(That's right. This is where we have to go.)
Princess Nami smiles softly.
The black procession of spirits sways against
the crimson sky. The photographer, who has scouted the area and is deciding on
a shooting spot, runs around carrying a heavy stepladder, not wanting to miss
the decisive moment.
It's dusk, the hour of the demon...

あとがき Afterword
鵺伝説が残る尾奈駅を始発に、百鬼夜行イベント会場である都田川河原から、徒歩５分の気賀駅が終点。天竜浜名湖鉄道予約制妖怪電車をイベント開始に、妖怪たちの控室も駅前に確保できる。立地条件がここまでそろっているのですから、もう、立ち上げたくなりますよね。
The starting point is Ona Station, where the
legend of the Nue remains, and the final stop is Kiga Station, which is a
five-minute walk from the Miyakoda Riverbank, where the Hyakki Yako event is
held. The Tenryu Hamanako Railway reservation-only Yokai Train will be
available at the start of the event, and you can also secure a waiting room for

さて、ＳＮＳを眺めて想像を膨らませ、地域を歩きまわって考えた シュミレーション奥浜名湖誌上百鬼夜行を、公開させていたしました。

imagination run wild, and walking around the local area, I came up with the simulation
HYAKKI-YAKOU in the Oku-Hamanako magazine, and have now made it public.
